Signs of Depression

A combination of these symptoms could indicate depression:

  • Change in personality - sad, withdrawn, anxious, and apathetic.
  • Change in behavior - depressed, can't concentrate, absent from school or work.
  • Alteration of eating or sleeping patterns.
  • Loss of interest in friends, activities, or hobbies previously enjoyed.
  • Fear of losing control, going crazy.
  • Drug or alcohol abuse.
  • Helplessness to get out of situations, powerless.
  • Slowing of thought or movement.
  • Sexual promiscuity.
  • Feelings of guilt and self-reproach, often without sufficient cause.
  • Sense of futility and worthlessness.
  • Negative feelings about themselves.
  • Constant fatigue - may feel worse early in the day and improve toward evening.
  • Chronic but unexplained aches and pains.
  • Loss of interest in life.
  • An inability to make decisions, analyze or solve problems.
  • Taking risks, involving themselves in dangerous undertakings.
  • Difficulty making decisions.
  • Significant weight change.
  • Hopelessness.
  • Declining dependability.
  • Increased sick days.
  • Thoughts of death or suicide.
  • Rejection (by parents/friends foster feelings of low self-esteem and worth)
  • Anger (if youth does not know how to express or effectively handle anger, especially if taught that anger is bad).
  • Guilt - from feelings of failure, condemnation.
  • Hormonal changes.
  • Diet
  • Grief due to loss.
  • Chronic illness.
  • Abuse (all types).
  • Traumatic event.
  • PAS (Post -Abortion Syndrome).
  • PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome).
  • Helplessness.
